Man and Van Frequently Asked Questions

Your complete guide to pricing, booking, planning, and saving money when you move with Compare the Man and Van.

Pricing & Quotes

Most moves fall between £30 and £70 per hour. Location, van size, number of helpers, and travel distance all influence the final price, with peak dates and larger jobs towards the higher end.

Yes. Fuel and mileage are built into your quote based on the distance between collection and delivery. Extra mileage or waiting time is only added if the route changes on the day.

Most drivers set a two-hour minimum to cover travel, loading, and unloading. After that, you pay in hourly or half-hour increments depending on the provider.

Yes. London moves can include congestion charges, parking permits, and higher operating costs. Even so, booking a local driver is typically cheaper and more convenient than hiring and driving a van yourself.

Every booking comes as a total price that covers mileage, fuel, insurance and the van size, helpers, and travel time you choose. It only changes if your move runs past the hours you've booked, when the clearly listed overtime rates kick in so you pay for the extra time and drivers are rewarded fairly.

Yes. When loading help is required, stairs add time and effort. Tell us about lifts or flights of stairs when booking so your quote stays accurate and your driver arrives prepared.

Yes, we can — but piano moves are specialised and not all of our drivers offer this service. If you need to move a piano, please get in touch and we’ll match you with a suitable specialist.

Booking & Service Options

Loading help is optional. Drivers secure the van and most carry straps and blankets to protect your items in transit. You can add helpers for loading and unloading when you book. We do not currently offer packing services, so you are responsible for ensuring all items are packed safely and securely before the move.

Yes. Select driver only, driver plus one helper, or driver plus two helpers during checkout to balance speed with cost.

It depends on your selection. Customer loading keeps prices low if you have your own help, while driver loading adds professional muscle for heavier jobs.

Absolutely. We know plans sometimes change. Please contact support as soon as you can and we will update your driver and adjust timing or stops where possible. Changes and cancellations are handled in line with our refunds and cancellations policy, so you can see what options are available.

All quotes are based on a single journey between your collection and delivery address. If you need to add more stops or trips, please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Most drivers arrive with blankets, straps, and a trolley as standard. Let us know about pianos, safes, or fragile items so we can match you with the right equipment.

We are really sorry if your move has not gone as expected. Please contact our support team as soon as you can so we can understand what happened and try to put things right. Our team will look into your booking details and speak with your driver where needed. You can also read our refunds and cancellations policy to see how refund requests are assessed.

We know that circumstances can change. In many cases you can cancel or reschedule your booking in line with our refunds and cancellations policy. The earlier you let us know, the more options we have, so please contact support as soon as you can to talk through the best solution.

Moving Day & Planning

Start planning four to six weeks ahead. That gives you time to declutter, order supplies, book your mover, and confirm admin without last-minute pressure.

Book as soon as your dates are confirmed, ideally four to six weeks before you move. Early booking secures the best choice of drivers and pricing.

Confirm your booking, arrange childcare or pet care, keep key paperwork handy, and pack an essentials box. Starting early with a checklist keeps movers and helpers aligned.

Include kettle, mugs, tea or coffee, toiletries, chargers, clothes, bedding, snacks, medication, and important documents so you can settle in without searching through every box.

Update banks, credit cards, DVLA, HMRC, GP, dentist, utilities, and subscriptions. Set up Royal Mail redirection for a year to capture anything missed.

Use a moving planner, break tasks into stages, and label boxes clearly with room names and contents. Keeping documents together in one folder avoids last-minute searches.

Budget & Packing Tips

Declutter before you pack, compare quotes, move midweek where possible, and choose customer loading if friends or family can help lift. Fewer items mean smaller vans and lower costs.

They can be if you buy everything new. Collect free boxes from supermarkets, reuse delivery packaging, and wrap items in towels or bedding to cut down on supplies.

Yes. Choose customer loading to handle the lifting while the driver provides the van, trolley, and straps. It can reduce your bill by up to 40% compared with full-service moves.

Add a 10–15% contingency for permits, extra supplies, storage, or takeaway meals. Fixed-price quotes and Royal Mail redirection help keep surprises under control.

Compare quotes, book early, move midweek, and source free packing materials. Using our Van Size Calculator helps you choose the right vehicle first time, avoiding extra trips.
