If you are moving house in London, the biggest mistake is to focus on one headline number without looking at what the quote is actually based on.
A short move can still take time, upper-floor properties can add work, and the right van and level of help can make a big difference to the final price.
Once you know what drives the quote, it becomes much easier to judge what looks fair, what is pushing the price up, and how to compare quotes properly.
London moving costs at a glance
Typical London man and van prices
These are the hourly man and van rates we currently see across London, based on van size, the level of help and the type of move. With Compare The Man and Van, your quote is all-in, so the price you see already reflects the details of your move.
| Option | Starting from | Many jobs fall around | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small van, Customer Loading | £30/hour | £35–£65/hour | Smaller moves with boxes, bags and a few items of furniture |
| Medium van, Customer Loading | £30/hour | £35–£50/hour | Flat or house-share moves where you are happy to do the lifting |
| Medium van, Driver Helping | £35/hour | £40–£55/hour | One of the most popular choices for flats and house-shares |
| Large van, Driver Helping | £40/hour | £45–£60/hour | Ideal when you have more bulky furniture or a bigger load |
| Luton van, Driver + 1 helper | £65/hour | £70–£90/hour | Better for larger flats or houses when you have a lot to move |
These are the kinds of prices people expect to see when comparing London moving costs, but the difference here is that the ranges are based on realistic move setups, not generic bedroom averages. If you already know what size van and level of help you need, you can get quotes for your London move now.
Why Compare The Man and Van quotes are easier to compare
When you compare quotes through Compare The Man and Van, they are based on the same move brief.
You enter your van size, the level of help you want, your access details and your route once, and we return quotes against that same set of information. That makes it much easier to compare prices properly, because you are not trying to work out whether each provider has priced a different version of the move.
That matters even more in London, where small differences in access, labour and route conditions can change the price quickly.
Compare quotesWhat really affects the price of a London move
The cost of a London move comes down to the amount of work involved.
In practice, that usually means five things: the size of van, the level of help you need, how easy the properties are to access, how far you are moving and how long the job is likely to take overall.
Van size
Larger vans cost more because they are used for bigger or more demanding jobs. More volume usually means more handling, more loading time and, in many cases, more labour too.
That is also why van size is often a better way to think about cost than a simple bedroom label. Two one-bed moves can be priced very differently if one fits into a small van and the other needs a large van or a Luton.
How much help you need
If you choose Customer Loading, you are responsible for the loading and unloading yourself. If you want the driver to help, or you need extra helpers, the price goes up because more labour is included in the move.
That is not a hidden add-on. It is part of what your quote is based on from the start.
Access and upper-floor moves
If your move is on an upper floor, involves stairs, has no lift, or is awkward to load from, the job usually takes longer and involves more carrying. That can increase the price when you are booking help with loading and unloading.
If you are handling all the carrying yourself, those access details do not affect the labour side of the quote in the same way. So the key thing is not just “stairs” on their own. It is whether the move is straightforward at ground level or whether the driver and any helpers are dealing with a more difficult access setup overall.
Distance
Distance does affect the price, but London jobs are not priced on mileage alone. A longer trip usually costs more. But at the shorter end, the move itself often matters more than the drive.
That is why a short London move is not automatically a cheap one.
Why short London moves can still cost more than expected
This is one of the biggest things that catches people out.
A short route does not always mean a quick or easy move. Even when the drive is only a few minutes, the job itself can still involve upper-floor loading, no lift access, awkward entrances, restricted parking and more time on site than expected.
That is why a short London move can still come back at a higher price than you had in mind. The distance may be small, but the work involved is not always small.
That matters even more in London, where so many people live in flats, maisonettes and apartments, and access often plays a much bigger role in the move than people expect.
London-specific costs to be aware of
Some London moving costs are about the move itself. Others come from the way London roads and streets are managed.
Congestion Charge
If your route goes through the Congestion Charge zone, that cost is already included in your quote with us, so there is nothing extra for you to sort afterwards.
The current Congestion Charge is £18 a day, and it applies 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 12pm to 6pm at weekends and on bank holidays.Correct as of March 2026.
That does not affect every London move, but where it does apply it is already taken care of in the quote.
ULEZ and LEZ
ULEZ is not something Compare The Man and Van customers need to worry about separately.
If a driver needs to pay ULEZ or is affected by LEZ rules, that sits on the driver side rather than becoming something you have to calculate yourself after the fact.
The current ULEZ charge for relevant non-compliant cars and vans up to 3.5 tonnes is £12.50 a day.
Checked March 2026.
The important point is simple: you do not need to work this out yourself when comparing quotes with us.
Parking, loading and red routes
Parking and loading are another reason London moves can be more complicated than they look on paper.
Red routes have much stricter stopping controls than ordinary borough-managed streets, and loading is restricted during operational hours unless signs and marked bays say otherwise.
That does not affect every move, but where it does apply it can make a real difference to how easy the job is to carry out and how long it takes. In some boroughs, formal parking suspensions are available for removal vans, but these usually need notice and the rules vary by council.
If your building is on a difficult street, has awkward loading, or sits in a tightly controlled parking area, it is worth checking that early rather than leaving it until moving day. For more detail, see our guides to parking suspensions and loading rules in London, red routes and moving house in London, and ULEZ and Congestion Charge for London moves.
Why comparing quotes matters more in London
London is a busy market, so prices and availability can vary a lot from one move to the next.
Many London moves on our platform receive 50 or more quotes, and some receive far more than that. That gives you real choice, but the real advantage is not just volume. It is being able to compare quotes for the same move, side by side.
That is especially useful in London, where changes in van size, help, access and route conditions can all affect the price.
When comparing quotes, it helps to check:
- van size
- whether it is Customer Loading or Driver Helping
- whether extra helpers are included
- access details such as upper floors or awkward loading
- timing
- any route-specific London constraints
With Compare The Man and Van, those details are already part of the move brief you submit, which makes side-by-side comparison much easier. If you want to compare quotes now, you can compare quotes for your move.
How to keep your London moving costs under control
There is no magic trick that makes every London move cheap, but there are a few things that make quotes more accurate and help avoid surprises.
Choose the right van size
Trying to squeeze a move into a van that is too small does not usually save money in the long run. It is better to get the right setup from the start, especially in London where access, loading time and multiple trips can quickly slow a move down.
Use our van size calculator to work out the right van for your move.
Be accurate about access
If there are upper floors, difficult entrances, awkward loading points or other access issues, say so early. Access can make a real difference to the amount of work involved.
Mention lifts and restricted loading points up front
Lift access can make a big difference to how efficiently the job is done. Restricted parking or awkward loading can do the opposite. The more accurate the information, the more meaningful the quote.
Book earlier if you want more choice
Last-minute bookings are still possible, but earlier booking usually gives you more choice over drivers and times, especially on busy dates.
Compare like-for-like quotes
Make sure the quotes you are looking at reflect the same van size, level of help and access details. Otherwise, you are not really comparing the same job.
Check parking and loading where relevant
If your street is restricted, or the building is likely to be difficult to load from, it is worth planning ahead rather than finding out on the day.
